Wacław Pawliszak - Mazeppa (ca. 1885)
A little background on this piece: it’s based on a poem by Lord Byron of the same title, which tells the legend of the Ukrainian military leader Ivan Mazepa. While Mazepa did indeed serve on the court of a Polish king for a while, there is no evidence that he was exiled by being tied naked to an angry horse for seducing a Count’s young wife. It does make a great story, however, and has been adapted into fascinating works of art like this one.
The Splendor of Iridescence: Structural Colors in the Animal World. Written and illustrated by Hilda Simon. 1971.
